Manahawkin PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

Hip fracture and GERD. We often comment that everything in the body is connected. Here is another scenario. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) come to the rescue for many Manahawkin reflux sufferers. Sadly, these PPIs may cause issues elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Manahawkin chiropractor closely monitors our patients who report hip pain, particularly if they are using PPIs, as many time chiropractic treatment does alleviate hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly recommended and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is higher in PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is greater while those on a high dose were at even more risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in prescribing PPI use long term and be cautious in understanding what the appropriate usage of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They open their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which inspired them to study if this were true. They recruited participants who were 40 years of age and over and had been prescribed PPIs for a minimum of 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk linked to PPI use increased with duration of use. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden explained in a recent Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who looked for care for spine, hip or shoulder pain said they had less pain after 4 months than those who saw a medical doctor…and their costs were less! (3,4) Hip pain is a usual complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, specifically in patients who are more than 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (particularly gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and the like are common approaches to treating and relieving hip pain.
