Manahawkin Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Manahawkin knee pain sufferers know that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with getting up and moving. Manahawkin Chiropractic Center hears our Manahawkin chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those Manahawkin knee pain sufferers would be grateful for some relief. What’s one approach? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Manahawkin Chiropractic Center wonders “How hard can eating be for Manahawkin knee pain relief?”

Manahawkin OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Manahawkin knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous Manahawkin knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the globe endure osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Manahawkin knee osteoarthritis sufferer can describe the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lowers the enjoyment of daily life. (1) It is just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet has potential to be fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet includes eating lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate consumption of dairy, poultry and eggs as well as red wine and olive oil as the chief source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be quite delicious and exciting for a new Mediterranean diet adherent.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation in addition to pain. An analysis of three studies points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet have lessened risk of worsening knee pain at four years follow up. For those who did not experience knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
