Neck Pain Relief That Starts Beyond Your Neck

October 13, 2026

If you've lived with neck pain for a long time, you've probably tried stretching it, rubbing it, and resting it. But here's something that you might not expect: some of the most helpful exercises for a sore neck target its neighbors instead. Your neck functions as part of a team that includes your jaw above and your upper back below, and two fresh studies published in 2026 show why that cooperation matters.

YOUR JAW HAS A SAY

Researchers followed 62 adults who had experienced neck pain for more than three months. (1) All participants did neck stabilization exercises for six weeks, and half also did Rocabado exercises, a short series of low-intensity movements for the jaw, tongue, and head posture. Both groups got better. The group that included jaw exercises, though, showed bigger gains in how much pressure their neck could handle before it started to hurt, in their sense of where their head was positioned, and in their balance. Because the jaw and neck share muscles and nerve pathways, it stands to reason that supporting one can help the other.

YOUR UPPER BACK HELPS OUT

A related clinical trial of 54 adults added thoracic (mid- and upper-back) mobility exercises to regular neck exercises. (2) The additional exercise didn't relieve pain more than neck exercises alone, but it did lead to better posture, spinal mobility, neck-related function, and use of the arms and shoulders. A tight upper back tends to leave your neck carrying an extra load, so freeing up it may help everything above move more freely.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO YOU

These were modest, brief studies, and in both, the extra exercises were added to neck exercises rather than replacing them. Still, they're a good reminder that the origin of your discomfort and the path to feeling better aren't always in the same area.
