BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the expanding recognition that diet offers a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being discussed. A recent paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to provide calcium and protein adequate enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other papers, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another recent paper states that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also lower hip fracture risk as well as risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this past month pointed out that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet closely had reduced chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, lower probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Manahawkin Chiropractic Center finds these new studies very interesting to share with our Manahawkin chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
