WHO SMOKES?

Researchers are inquisitive about factors related to smoking. In a review of 7547 patients who went through back surgery, they found that 18% were smokers. The researchers stated that compared to the non-smokers, the smokers were younger, male, nondiabetic, and nonobese. These patients who have coronary artery disease were more apt to be smokers. Smokers who underwent lumbar spine back surgery presented initially more with leg pain than back pain and disability. Their employment, insurance/uninsured, and education status were also related to smoking status. Interestingly though, smoking status didn’t influence the disability status one year after back surgery. (1) Altering such risk factors work equally well for smokers and nonsmokers luckily. Manahawkin Chiropractic Center would encourage a Manahawkin smoker who has Manahawkin back pain establish a plan to stop smoking.

SMOKING’S EFFECTS ON THE BODY

The body gets what is good for it…and what’s not. Smoking is not. Studying 2307 smokers and non-smokers, researchers discovered that smoking is most strongly associated with spine pain. Headache, trunk pain and limb pain ensued. Active smoking is associated with pain in every part of the body. The spine and head withstand the brunt of the painful influence though. If a smoker does not like pain, you’ll want to consider stop smoking! (2) Manahawkin Chiropractic Center is with you to support your attempt to quit smoking when you are ready.
