Could a Plant Compound Help Protect Your Spine Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever had disc-related back pain or neck pain, you know how critical healthy spinal discs are to moving comfortably through your day. Now, promising new research is looking at a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may specifically support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin supports nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers determined that quercetin works by easing a specific inflammatory pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration activity.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different view. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of tissue hardening — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a major role in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin shows promise as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help block this scarring process from advancing.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU

While more research is required before quercetin becomes a regular part of disc care, these findings build on a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a helpful role alongside non-invasive, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Manahawkin Chiropractic Center, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's innate healing.
