Manahawkin Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think

VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!

If you've ever had your chiropractor mention vitamin D, there's very good reason for that conversation. This sunshine vitamin is quietly doing essential work in our bodies — and two newly published research papers remind us just how much it matters, especially as we get older. At Manahawkin Chiropractic Center, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Manahawkin — read on to see what the latest science says about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!

WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US

A major systematic review and meta-analysis released in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 examined 69 clinical trials involving nearly 154,000 participants to calculate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of falls and fractures. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D consumed in combination was associated with a somewhat reduced risk for fractures — a meaningful finding for anyone who has witnessed a parent or grandparent struggle after a fall. No single supplement tells the whole story of good health, but when research at this scale points out a consistent pattern, it's worth paying attention. (1)

The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, zoomed out to look at the bigger picture — investigating what vitamin D means for our health across the full sweep of getting older. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is associated with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a reduced risk of falling. That's big! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most important protection we have. (2)

MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US

What's striking is that the research found roughly 6 in 10 older adults are vitamin D-deficient — and the consequences extend well beyond bones, touching muscle health, heart function, brain health, and even how long we live. Bottomline, vitamin D is one of those nutrients our whole body is counting on. (2)

YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED

Here at Manahawkin Chiropractic Center, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you in the door. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to alleviate back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works brilliantly alongside good nutrition. Healthy vitamin D levels support the muscles and bones that surround your spine, which means your treatments may feel better and hold longer when your body has the building blocks it desires.
