Postural Changes When Wearing Clear Aligners like Invisalign®

January 02, 2018

Clear teeth aligners and posture!?  Now there’s a pair. Not necessarily a pair you would put together though! Manahawkin teeth aligners are popular today. Manahawkin Chiropractic Center sees many Manahawkin chiropractic patients who have decided to use these new devices to straighten teeth. They are nearly unseen. They are bendable. They come out when the clear aligner wearer wishes to remove them. Wearers gain some control of the process. All is good, and yet the treatment planning like that of Invisalign® is newer technology. Everyone is learning more about it. Manahawkin Chiropractic Center hadn’t thought that orthodontic and Manahawkin chiropractic treatment plans might come in contact with each other. Surprise!

TOOTH ALIGNMENT TREATMENT AND PLANNING

Most Manahawkin chiropractic patients recall (too well for some!)  the classic fixed appliances (braces) used in orthodontics to straighten teeth. Many Manahawkin orthodontic patients lived with them! Research presents that in using Invisalign® technology, tooth type and movement are crucial elements to think about when the treatment plan is set. Invisalign® technology lets clinicians to predict tooth positions with high accuracy when done in nonextraction cases, but some of the actual outcomes may vary from those predictions. Most variances were not clinically relevant though. (1) Malocclusion (a misalignment or imprecise relationship of the teeth of the top and bottom teeth when they come close to each other as the jaws close) plays a role in teeth straightening treatment planning. When comparing Invisalign aligners to conventional fixed appliances for mild to moderate malocclusion issues, they both corrected the condition. Invisalign® wearers finished faster (by 5.7 months!). Invisalign® improvement was not as “great” in effectiveness as fixed appliances. (2) One study planned to determine relationships between body posture in the sagittal profile and sagittal jaw position. The mandible (lower jaw)  has a greater effect on body posture than other craniofacial parameters, so patients with severe malocclusions need to be extended extra attention especially if a jaw surgery is being considered. (3) Manahawkin Chiropractic Center is in line with having the Manahawkin orthodontists determine this!

TOOTH ALIGNMENT WITH INVISALIGN AND POSTURE

But Manahawkin Chiropractic Center is fine when called upon to help with any posture issues that arise. A recent study points out that clear, occlusal coverage aligners like Invisalign® may well influence body posture. The the upper and lower spine units are affected. When clear aligner wearers were examined after 6 months of use, the Kyphosis Angle, the Upper Thoracic Inclination and Pelvic Inclination were changed.  It has been reported that these clear aligners change a wearer’s vertical height due to the aligners placement over the teeth and, subsequently, stimulate periodontal receptors hindering the jaw closing muscles and, quite possibly, changing  mandibular posture. (4) Manahawkin Chiropractic Center is as astonished as our Manahawkin chiropractic patients with all that is possible with these clear aligners! Manahawkin Chiropractic Center is aware of this potential and keeps it in mind when examining Manahawkin chiropractic patients who wear these.
