Manahawkin PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

July 27, 2021

Hip fracture and GERD. We often write how everything in the body is connected. Here is another example. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often prescribed for many Manahawkin reflux sufferers. Sadly, these PPIs may trigger issues elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, even though they help with GERD. Your Manahawkin chiropractor watches closely our patients who develop hip pain, particularly if they are using PPIs, as oftentimes chiropractic treatment helps ease hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is higher for PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those taking a high dose were at even more risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in recommending PPI use long term and be cautious in understanding what the proper usage of PPIs is so that they don’t take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which set them on a course to see for themselves. They recruited participants who were 40 years of age and over and had been prescribed PPIs for a minimum of 90 days. They then cross referenced any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in those who didn't use PPI and that fracture risk linked to PPI use increased with duration of use. (2) Avoiding hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden described in a new Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who sought care for spine, hip or shoulder pain said they had less pain after 4 months than those who visited a medical doctor…and the cost of care was less! (3,4) Hip pain is a usual complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, especially in patients over 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (particularly gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and such are common approaches to treating and relieving hip pain. Manahawkin Chiropractic Center will design the right approach to care for your Manahawkin hip pain!
