Knowing the anatomy of the spine is continually at the forefront of your chiropractor’s mind as you and each spine pain, neck pain, back pain patient comes through the door! It’s so exciting! (Are you not you glad someone finds it exciting?)
LEARNING ANATOMY IN SCHOOL
Going through school, we were all guilty of learning only to pass an exam. When in professional school, such learning is more important than ever since it will influence everyday work. (How much do you remember from your high school or college days?) An international survey of chiropractors and anatomists described that chiropractors felt that a higher level of anatomy instruction during chiropractic education was advantageous for clinical practice, allowing better understanding, application, and analysis of anatomical material to support a clinical decision in their daily clinical practice. (1) An Australian study of chiropractors compared their knowledge of anatomy to that of chiropractic students. The chiropractic practitioners reported that they knew their anatomy and demonstrated it by taking a test of their knowledge. This was contrasted to the equivalent in their chiropractic student counterparts. The chiropractors showed that they kept their knowledge of anatomy - and knew they did! – breaking the hypothesis that chiropractic practitioners may not keep it after a period of time. Knowledge of anatomy is utilized daily in chiropractic practice, and chiropractors understand their anatomy. (2) Your Manahawkin chiropractor does! Just ask to find out more.
SPINAL ANATOMY KNOWLEDGE PUT TO USE IN CHIROPRACTIC CLINICAL PRACTICE
Performing spinal manipulation every day utilizes knowledge of the spine’s anatomy every day. The most common reasons people said they sought chiropractic care were low back pain (49.7%), neck pain (22.5%), and extremity issues (10.0%). The typical treatment they experienced were spinal manipulation (79.3%), soft tissue therapy (35.1%), and formal patient education (31.3%). (3) Spinal conditions receive a great deal of attention from chiropractic patients and their chiropractors, of course! But positive side effects of chiropractic care emerge in the medical literature as well like potential cardiovascular benefit. In a placebo-controlled, assessor-blinded, randomized trial, researchers reported on the immediate effects of manual therapy to the upper thoracic spine on cardiovascular autonomic control of patients with musculoskeletal pain (ie, back pain, spine pain, neck pain, etc.). The researchers stated that musculoskeletal pain intensified the risk of cardiovascular events. (4) Come feel these benefits of chiropractic treatment based on knowledge of the spine’s anatomy.
