The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It’s a deep muscle and typically considered a back muscle as it stretches from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Several bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain.
