Manahawkin CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum
The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It’s a deep muscle and typically considered a back muscle as it stretches from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum triggers lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) A variety of bridge-type exercises are being examined as to how they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s dual layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain. (6) Manahawkin Chiropractic Center and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Manahawkin chiropractic visit to Manahawkin Chiropractic Center.
